Domaine du Terme

Posted in Uncategorized on 12 February 2019 by stephen wayne

We began the morning here, at Domaine du Terme in Gigondas, where Anne-Marie & Roland Gaudin generously toured us through their winery before sitting down in a cozy room, with fireplace roaring (it’s nearly freezing here), to guide us through their wines. The 2018 Gigondas Rose was a great way to begin as it is full of savory spice & bright zippy refreshing red berry fruit. We then tasted through a series of red wines from the appellation which were at once charming and quite serious, capable of aging for any number of years, some surpassing the quality of Chateauneuf at a fraction of the price. We spent the next few hours enjoying Anne-Marie’s cooking with lively conversation finishing with a stupendous cheese course. A few of their wines are already on the shelves at Renegade with more to follow this Spring.

Oh…Yes…Please

We were re-introduced to this producer at Boulevard in SF a few weeks ago (you may have seen the post). Fast forward to today and these two beauties arrived.

On the left:

2014 Pommard “Les Epenots”: “gorgeously complex aromas of plum, violet, earth, sandalwood and discreet spice nuances. There is flat out amazing concentration…velvety…endless…incredibly persistent finale. This is a seriously good Epenots and one that is only going to get better and better with time in bottle. If you can find it, buy it.” -AM

On the right:

2012 Beaune “Reversées”: “There is an appealing freshness to the pretty array of black currant, violet, spice and earth scents. There is outstanding richness, size, weight, concentration and power…a very firm tannic spine on the hugely long finish.: -AM

$85 & $198 respectively. We are open until 6pm the rest of the week. #renegadewines #santabarbara #winenerd #sb #sommlife #winetasting #wineporn #seesb #trustyourpalate #montecito #sbcwine #seriousjuice #winetime #winegeeks #winewednesday #funkzone #centralcalifornia #foodiesofsb #zagat #sommelier #thatwinenerd #nicolasrossignol

Merkelbach!

One of the very best Rieslings we’ve had in recent memory. Savory, spicy, sweet (but not sweet…hmmmm). Perfect accompaniment with the saltiness of Gruyere and Akbari pistachios on a rainy afternoon. We can’t say enough about these two brothers who have been working their vineyards for over 60 years. Angler

Posted in Uncategorized on 22 January 2019 by stephen wayne

A swing and a… not sure how to feel about Esquire naming Angler “the best new restaurant of 2018”. I mean, yeah its decor is cool, weird, untraditional, imagine hunting lodge decor meets the warehouse of Captain Quint from Jaws. It’s bizarre, complete with a full size bear at the back bar, and large sharks mounted on the walls throughout. The food? Appetizers were excellent if only by a hair. They were pretty odd too. The whole fish , petrole sole, took the serve so long to de-bone it was cold when we had our first bite. The sea bass was really tasty though. Service was excellent however. But best new restaurant in the country??? Not even in our top 20. We did have a great time however and would come back for a drink at the bar. One pet peeve that seems to occur often with these 100+ page wine lists: they are always out of the bottle we order.

Gary Danko!

Here’s the abbreviated story of Gary Danko last night: perfect!

For a great restaurant to continue to be great even after decades is a small miracle. Each dish was thoughtfully presented and utterly sensational. The 2001 Meo Camuzet that we brought and decanted for an hour is what great Burgundy is all about. The finale consisted of a rather large selection of cheese. Next time you’re in the city make a reservation. Highly recommended! #renegadewines #santabarbara #winenerd #sb #sommlife #winetasting #wineporn #seesb #trustyourpalate #montecito #sbcwine #seriousjuice #winetime #winegeeks #winewednesday #funkzone #centralcalifornia #foodiesofsb #zagat #sommelier #thatwinenerd #intothebottle #somm3 #savorsb

Soave? Just Say Yes Please

Posted in Uncategorized on 18 January 2019 by stephen wayne

Soave. Ho Hum. The same way you think of grocery store Pinot Grigios or chain-restaurant Chardonnays. But there are a hand full of producers that portray wines from Soave in an entirely new light. These wines have verve and dimension, incredible minerality and force. They are great seafood wines, worthy of aging for six, seven, eight-plus years. Roccolo Grassi produces one of these wines, from the varietal Garganega. The wine pictured is from a small, single vineyard and it’s $22. Neighbors think they’re crazy because that same vineyard could be producing 80,90, 100 dollar Amarone wines. We are thankful that it doesn’t. The wine is in stock and we think you should really experience it! #renegadewines #santabarbara #winenerd #sb #sommlife #winetasting #wineporn #seesb #trustyourpalate #montecito #sbcwine #seriousjuice #winetime #winegeeks #winewednesday #funkzone #centralcalifornia #foodiesofsb #zagat #sommelier #thatwinenerd #intothebottle #somm3 #savorsb

Bojos 2017!

Posted in Uncategorized on 9 January 2019 by stephen wayne

From Beaujolais superstar Marcel Lapierre: 2017 Juliénas ($33) – This wine is grown on the Côte de Bessay, a single parcel of 6 acres north and above of the Village of Julienas at the border of the St Amour appelation.

Actually half the parcel is classified as St Amour Aoc and the other half as Julienas Aoc. Mathieu Lapierre holds a long contract with the vineyard owner and together with his cousin, Christophe Pacalet, they work the parcel and vinify the wine following the same principles of fermentation without sulfites originally implemented by their father and uncle, Marcel Lapierre. The forty years old vines are grown on a deep blue granitic soil fully exposed south, southeast. The age of these vines brings concentration and structure to the wine.

Only indigenous yeasts are used for the fermentation and they require an higher temperature to work properly.

This is a deep ruby-colored wine that combines aromas of violet flowers, raspberries and spices.. It shows an impressive structure and also a good concentration of fruit on the palate. This is an age worthy Beaujolais that could be put aside for a few years.

And of course Lapierre’s 2017 Morgon ($36) of which he is most famous for. In stock today. #renegadewines #santabarbara #winenerd #sb #sommlife #winetasting #wineporn #seesb #trustyourpalate #montecito #sbcwine #seriousjuice #winetime #winegeeks #winewednesday #funkzone #centralcalifornia #foodiesofsb #zagat #sommelier #thatwinenerd #intothebottle #somm3 #savorsb
