Very Best of Show! A customer asked us on Tuesday whether there were any great wines from Pouilly-Fume. We confessed to him that we had never had a truly great wine from there but many really good ones. Today we can say with confidence we have now had a great wine from this appellation. It is in stock for $30. And now a little history and tasting notes from this historic property. Wines have been produced from the vineyards of this Château since 1396, but the winery owes its current incarnation to the Count and Countess Alain d’Estutt d’Assay, who resurrected it in 1952. Today it is run by their son, Henry d’Assay, and his sisters. Pale gold with a silvery shimmer. An open and intense nose, offering notes of heirloom apple and citrus fruit. A fresh citrussy attack on the palate and seductive minerality. This wine has a wow factor of 10. If there ever was an overachiever it would be the wines from Simon Bize in Savigny-les-Beaune. They are fascinating, diverse, and incredibly well-made. This wine revolves around aroma & structure. It’s from a higher elevation vineyard, Les Perriers. There’s a nice richness to the soil which lends to a earthiness and an almost animalistic haunt to the wine. This is serious Bourgogne that could use a few years in a dark cellar or a few hours in a decanter before enjoying. A perfect pairing with Duck Breast Stuffed with Apples and Chestnuts and Roasted in Bacon from the Boulevard Cookbook (pg. 143). The last few cases of HALF bottles have finally arrived at Renegade. This is old school Riesling steeped in tradition going back generations. Rockdust & Minerality paired with lovely melon, pear, GrannySmith. This morphs into a matrix of ripe apricot, almond cream and peach. Sublime. $15/375ml while they last. Pairs superbly at Arigato.
